Pure tone audiometry

Pure tone audiometry (PTA) is a gold standard test for audiologists to know the degree and type of hearing loss. This is usually the first test that is conducted at a hearing aid clinic. The test is conducted in a sound treated room with no noise interference. Audiometer is an instrument used to measure your hearing loss. A calibrated audiometer is used to present a warble tone through headphones, and the patient is instructed to respond by pressing a switch upon listening to the sound/ the softest level of sound. Bone conduction (BC) testing is a procedure where the sensitivity of inner ear is measured. Inner ear consists of cochlea and auditory nerve. Impedance audiometry is a procedure to test the status of middle ear. The test is non invasive and fast. Impedance results give us precise information about the middle ear pressure, the compliance of the tympanic membrane (ear drum) and ear canal volume. Oto acoustic emissions (OAE)

Oto acoustic emission is a procedure to test the functioning of the outer hair cells in the inner ear/ cochlea. The instrument measures the response of the outer hair cells (OHCs) to the sound presented. The presence of OAE gives a ‘pass’ result and the absence of OAE gives a ‘refer’ result. OAE is mostly used as a hearing screening tool for infants, and occasionally as a diagnostic tool for differential diagnosis. Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA)

BERA is an electrophysiological test which measures the response of auditory nerve and auditory pathway to various acoustic stimuli. The procedure takes 30-45 minutes where electrodes are placed on the forehead and mastoid to record the response. Sound is presented through insert earphones. The test helps the audiologist to obtain the degree of hearing loss. BERA is mostly done in children when they cannot give consistent reliable response to Pure tone audiometry, and can also be done for an infant as young as 2 days. Post fitting- care and maintenance
